How to read the result

The fee is only one side of the decision

A lower fee is not automatically better, and a higher fee is not automatically justified. The useful question is whether the planning, investment management, tax coordination, and behavior coaching you receive are worth the all-in cost.

Ask for one number: “What is the total dollar amount I would have paid you and the investments you recommend during the last calendar year?”

What is an AUM fee?

An assets-under-management fee is calculated as a percentage of the money an advisor manages. At 1%, a $1 million portfolio starts at roughly $10,000 per year. The dollar charge usually rises if the portfolio grows, even if the service does not change.

What the calculator includes

For percentage fees, the model grows the portfolio by your expected return, deducts the advisor and investment percentages each year, and compares that result with the same portfolio before fees. For flat fees, it deducts the stated dollar fee annually plus any investment expenses.

Questions to ask next

  • Does the fee decline at higher asset levels?
  • Are tax planning, retirement planning, and estate coordination included?
  • Are there fund expenses, custody charges, or trading costs on top?
  • Can I pay for a one-time plan instead of ongoing management?
