Before the meeting

How to interview a financial advisor

Treat an initial meeting as an interview, not a commitment. A good advisor should be comfortable explaining their fees, conflicts, credentials, ideal client, investment beliefs, and the exact work they will do for you.

Do not ask every question

Pick the six to ten questions that matter most. The quality of the conversation matters more than completing a checklist. Pay attention to whether the advisor answers directly, asks thoughtful questions in return, and explains tradeoffs without hiding behind jargon.

A useful final question: “What would make you tell a prospective client that your firm is not the right fit?”

Verify after the conversation

Ask for the firm’s Form ADV, Form CRS, fee schedule, sample financial plan, and service calendar. Compare their stated fee with our financial advisor fee calculator, then read the guide to fiduciaries and financial advisors.
